The Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on The Volume and Pattern of Public Transport Trips in The Greater Sydney Area

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic and its following restrictions changed the volume and patterns of Public Transport (PT) trips in the Greater Sydney area. This study explores the trip volume changes by applying comparative and statistical analyses on hourly PT fare card (Opal) transactions data for trips in 2019, 2020 and 2021 (up to March). The findings show that total PT trips in 2020 declined by 45% in comparison with 2019, with the maximum decline being in April 2020 at 79.4%. Although there was a sharp decline in PT demand for 6 weeks in March and April 2020, the demand has smoothly recovered by March 2021.
